<p><i>‘My boyfriend bought me a </i><em>Hysteric Glamour</em><i> shirt; they’re hard to find in the states, got me feeling couture…’</i></p>
<p>Quoting early-2000s Gwen Stefani lyrics (from <i>memory</i>) isn’t something I’d expected to do in my work for <strong>OTAQUEST</strong>, but this may be the only time it’s appropriate. SUPER LOVERS and <a href="https://www.otaquest.com/living-with-a-bathing-ape/">A Bathing Ape</a> also made appearances in her 2004 track ‘Harajuku Girls,’ piquing the curiosity of young western fashionistas. But Hysteric Glamour (or, at least, its creator) already had deep roots in the west, drawing on a mix of rock-and-roll sensibility and pop culture simplicity to create an unforgettable brand still selling after 36 years.</p>
<p>Now, decades after some rando in a New York club was spotted wearing the brand by none other than Andy Warhol, heads are still turning. The fashion-scape has changed, with more and more street brands pivoting into louder and louder designs, but Hysteric Glamour is the grandfather of anti-fashion, and consumers continue to pay homage accordingly.</p>
<h2>Counter Cultures Before Counter Culture</h2>
<p>Being anti-fashion is almost expected when it comes to the image of Japanese streetwear, but HYSTERIC GLAMOUR was one of the pioneers of such an outlandish concept. The brand was created by Nobuhiko Kitamura as the perfect antithesis to the strict rulings of school and work. When still young, he became enamored with the danger and mystique of western punk and new wave. Blending these passions into his designs, Kitamura came out of fashion school with one goal; to give people what they wanted in the early 80s: rebellion and revolution.</p>
<p>The brand is known worldwide for its loud graphics, offensive slogans, and its odes to comic books and hippie culture. They put patched leather jackets and neon-blended pop T-shirts into the hands of whoever is ready to make a statement. And over the years, that made quite the splash: Kitamura ended up hanging out with everyone from Iggy Pop to Sofia Coppola. Sure, HYSTERIC GLAMOUR may still hold a kind of obsessive mystery (after all, it’s tough to find in the states, as Gwen crooned) but it’s had more of an impact than many recognize.</p>
<p>The reason the brand is still prominent in the Tokyo fashion-scape? Collaborations. HYSTERIC GLAMOUR does them right and does them often.</p>
<h2>HYSTERIC GLAMOUR &amp; Supreme?</h2>
<p>A visually loud and aggressive label like HG deserves an equally loud and notable partner. In 2013, Playboy came into the picture, and the two went on to create a retro line for men and women alike. Featuring vintage images of the quintessential Playboy Bunnies and classic iconography, the line celebrated 60 years of the magazine. It was launched in Japan before becoming available online for those living in the United States.</p>

On November 11th, both institutions will launch the second installment of their fall collaboration, which includes works by Edvard Munch, Jackson Pollock, Lybov Popova and Faith Ringgold.</p>

<p>The forthcoming capsule features the Authentic and Slip-On of the first installment, alongside new takes on the Era and Sk8-Hi. Among the four silhouettes, the Era, which debuted in 1976 and was formerly known as Vans #95, boasts three of the six works of art translated from their respective mediums to canvas shoes: Munch’s “The Scream” (1895) and Ringgold’s “Woman Free Yourself” and “Freedom Woman Now,” both from 1971. At age 90, Rinngold, who was born in Harlem, is still actively working to dismantle racism and social injustice from her home base in Englewood, New Jersey. Her “Seven Passages to a Flight” (1995) also serves as the inspiration for the lone laceless option in November’s capsule; “My mother said I’d have to work twice as hard to go half as far” is printed on the pair’s midsole, while the art piece itself is replicated on the inner lining.</p>

<p>Pollock’s “One: Number 31, 1950” (1950) and Popova’s “Untitled.” (1917) take over their respective Authentic and Sk8-Hi canvases. Unlike Munch’s piece, which is isolated within the confines of the Era’s upper, Pollock’s divisive painting sees no boundaries, covering every inch of the shoe (save for the lining and laces). Popova’s untitled piece falls inline with the inclusion of the culturally-welcomed “The Scream,” but delivers an alternating pattern at any given angle.</p>

<h2><b>Creative outdoor runways </b></h2>
<p>Like its Paris and New York counterparts, Tokyo saw parks and outdoor spaces transform into fashion runways. Models weaved through pathways and foliage in Shinjuku Gyoen’s balmy greenhouse for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IwEm1pS1c0" data-rel="lightbox-video-0">TAAK</a>’s show, while <a href="https://rakutenfashionweektokyo.com/en/brands/detail/mikio-sakabe/">MIKIO SAKABE</a> announced its 2021 Spring / Summer collection on the rooftop of the newly-opened Miyashita Park in Shibuya.</p>
<p>Despite the rainy weather at the latter, designers Mikio Sakabe and Shueh Jen-Fang’s choice of sheer fabrics, translucent raincoats and practical trainers were up to the task. Instead of soggy models with clothes clinging miserably to skin, the collection’s sweet pastel shades, crisp whites and puffy sleeves and skirts beautifully juxtaposed against the dark grey skies and reflected off the wet sheen of the ground.</p>

<p>Fashion has always been a reflection of the world we live in and this Tokyo Fashion Week was no exception. Muted tones, practicality and light layers were popular motifs — as was the appearance of masks. Fashion photographer Louise Angerer reflects that “The fashion was still more reserved, streamlined and functional than in previous years, and the runway felt subdued with darker hues.” She jokes that “Many collections felt almost post-apocalyptic, as if this is what’s left after the craziness of 2020.”</p>
<p>Men’s fashion brand <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSeGqbHfkRA" data-rel="lightbox-video-1">Meanswhile</a> epitomized this concept. With practical vests, straps, buckles and drawstring sleeve cuffs, all set against durable, waterproof fabrics in stony, earthy shades, the models looked ready for a survival mission. You’d be forgiven for thinking they were lost on a mountainside if it wasn’t for the industrial scaffolding hunched over the runway, pulling us back into the realm of urban apparel.</p>
